Another 72 deaths in Ontario and 50 in Quebec, hospitalizations still in decline

Marzio Pelù, February 2, 2022August 25, 2023

TORONTO – Covid-19: the death toll continues to rise in Ontario and throughout Canada: today, another 72 deaths were recorded in the province, bringing the total from the beginning of the pandemic to 11,576 (the total data is recalculated by day in day with the updates of the lists of the dead), while in Quebec the victims were 50 with the total rising to 13,336. Across Canada in the past two years, the virus has killed 34,170 people.

However, hospitalizations are falling. Ontario health officials reported today that fewer than 3,000 people are in hospital with Covid-19: 2,939 people are currently hospitalized and 555 of these patients are in intensive care. The number of people in intensive care is therefore constantly dropping: they were 597 on Saturday, 597 on Sunday, 583 on Monday and 568 on Tuesday. Last week they were over 600.

The Province continues to underline, providing the data, that 56% of the 2,939 people hospitalized are there for Covid-19, while the remaining 44% were hospitalized for other reasons and tested positive for the virus once the test in hospital. The percentages change in intensive care where 83% of patients are hospitalized because of the virus, while 17% of cases are there for other reasons, but they also have the virus.

As for the vaccination status, 219 of the people in intensive care are fully vaccinated, 182 are not vaccinated and 16 are kept vaccinated, while the remaining 138 have an unknown vaccination status. However, according to data published Tuesday by the Ontario Science Table, which also takes into account population size, people who have been fully vaccinated with at least two doses are 82.9 percent less likely to end up in hospital and the 91.2% less end up in intensive care than unvaccinated people.

As for infections, today Ontario recorded 3,909 on the basis, however, of a not very high number of tests, given the limitation of access to tampons only to “at risk” categories: the tests carried out were 27,720, with a positivity rate of 13.4%. Currently active and known cases in Ontario are 41,534.

Other 4,912 people, in the meantime, have recovered from Covid-19: the total number of patients healed in Ontario since the beginning of the pandemic is 986,715, out of a total of 1,039,825 confirmed cases in laboratory.

In addition to the mentioned 50 deaths, Quebec today recorded a decline in hospitalized patients by over 100 units. There are 122 fewer people in the hospital, for a current total of 2,730 patients. The number of people admitted to intensive care units where there are currently 204 people is also down – 14 fewer. 3,816 new cases registered, even if the number – due to the limitation of access to tests – is unreliable. The positivity rate is 11.6%. There are 39,671 active and known cases in Quebec.
