Ontario and Quebec, new Covid-19 cases down today

TORONTO – The number of new cases in Ontario continues to decrease: today 610, down from 715 on Sunday, although up from 600 a week ago. The seven-day moving average of new infections is now 711, down four units from last Monday and, with 23,864 tests processed in the past 24 hours (Sunday was 29,906), the provincial-level positivity rate is now 2.7%, down from 3.1% last Monday. 

Of the cases reported today, 458 (75%) were detected in individuals who are not fully vaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status and 152 (25%) in those who are fully immunized. About 85% of Ontario residents 12 years of age and older have received at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine, and 79% are fully vaccinated. While children under the age of 12, who are not yet eligible to receive an injection, account for about 10% of those who are not vaccinated, 20% of Ontarians currently eligible are not yet fully immunized.

Virus-related ICU admissions dropped week-to-week to 177 today, down from 189 seven days ago. The number of patients she has experienced with ventilators has increased in the past week to from 116 on Monday.

Ontario also added, today, another 2 virus-related deaths to its overall death toll of 9,655 since the start of the pandemic.

The number of active infections in the province is now 6,376, up from 6,216 a week ago. 580,194 cases of Covid-19 recorded in Ontario since the beginning of the pandemic and 564,163 healings. Overall, 1,574,648 cases of coronavirus, 1,502,552 recoveries and 27,398 deaths have been recorded across Canada since the start of the pandemic (data updated at 1.30pm today). The cases still active are 44,316.

Today, Quebec recorded 679 new cases (compared to 742 on Sunday) and 1 death (compared to 4 on Sunday). Of the latest reported infections, 457 were found in people who were not vaccinated or who had only received a first dose in the past two weeks.

The number of hospitalizations rises from three to 280. 92 patients in intensive care, an increase of five. Of the people hospitalized on Sunday, health officials report that nearly all were unvaccinated or had received a single dose less than two weeks ago.

8,489 vaccine doses administered in the last 24 hours: Quebec has so far distributed over 12.7 million doses. About 88.9% of Quebecers over the age of 12 have received at least one dose, while 84.4% are considered fully vaccinated with two injections.
