Ontario, more new Covid cases among vaccinated

Marzio Pelù, November 22, 2021August 25, 2023

TORONTO – Today’s news is not in the number of new Covid-19 cases recorded (627, down from 741 on Sunday but up from 552 a week ago), but in the vaccination status of the majority of the infected. Of today’s infections in Ontario, in fact, 286 concern fully vaccinated people, 282 unvaccinated people, 36 concern people with unknown vaccination status and 23 with a dose of the vaccine. Thus, for the first time, infections in vaccinated people outnumbered those in unvaccinated individuals.

It is equally true, however, that unvaccinated people are still, proportionally, the most affected by the virus: about 45% of today’s cases have in fact been found in 20% of the population who have not yet received a single dose of vaccine.

Returning to the general data, the numbers are almost all on the rise: the seven-day moving average continues to rise from week to week, reaching 656 (last Monday it was 573). The positivity rate also rose today with 19,552 tests processed, and is now at 3.4%, up from 2.2% last Monday. It is known that the active (known) cases are also growing and are now 5,597 (a week ago they were 4,985). Sale of the death toll since the beginning of the pandemic: another death was recorded today bringing the total in Ontario to 9,968.

On the other hand, the number of Covid-19 patients receiving treatment in Ontario’s intensive care units falls: 133, down from 141 seven days ago.

Regarding the territorial distribution of today’s cases, the public units with the highest number of new cases include Toronto (92), Simcoe-Muskoka (53), Peel Region (53), York Region (38), Sudbury (37) , Waterloo (35) and Ottawa (32).

Moving on to Quebec, today the province recorded 692 new cases out of 21,070 tests carried out. Health officials in the province also confirmed another 2 deaths, bringing Quebec’s total since the start of the pandemic to 11,560.

Admissions in the hospitals rose by 5, bringing the number of people in Quebec hospitals to 204. Of these, 46 people are in intensive care, up by 5.

Of the new cases, 398 were detected in unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people, 23 people who received a dose more than two weeks ago, and 271 fully vaccinated people. Provincial health officials are keen to underline, in disseminating the bulletin of the day, that “the risk of infection for unvaccinated people is 3.9 times that of those who have received two doses and the risk of hospitalization is 16.7 times that of those who have received two doses. is fully vaccinated “.

And speaking of vaccinations, today in Quebec they administered 3,770 doses, for a total of 13,472,496 doses administered in the province since the beginning of the campaign. At present, a total of 6,838,621 Quebecers, or 91% of the eligible population (aged 12 years and older), have received the first dose of the vaccine and 6,582,036 people, or 88% of the eligible population aged 12 and over, have received two.

Active cases in Quebec are 8,334.
