Kanadas 154. Geburtstag

(more…)

154-te Urodziny Kanady

Urodziny Kanady to nieformalna nazwa, którą określa się Canada Day. Chodzi tutaj o połączenie kolonii Canada, Nova Scotia i New Brunswick dnia 1 lipca 1867 w szerszą brytyjską federację czterech prowincji, gdyż kolonia Canada została podzielona na prowincje Ontario i Quebec. (more…)

Canada’s 154th Birthday

Canada’s Birthday is an informal name that goes by Canada Day. The concept of “birthday” is a kind of simplification, as Canada Day is the anniversary of only one national milestone on the way to full independence. It is about joining the colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick on July 1, 1867, into a wider British federation of four provinces, as the Canada colony was divided into the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Canada became a kind of kingdom within the British Empire, commonly known as the Dominion of Canada. (more…)

Viruses and suspects: Rota challenges Trudeau about scientists fired in Winnipeg

TORONTO – Anthony Rota challenges Justin Trudeau. The battleground is the controversial story surrounding the dismissal of two virologists of Chinese origin from the National Microbiology Laboratory, a maximum-security laboratory in Winnipeg where lethal viruses such as Ebola are studied. This tug-of-war, which has been developing for several weeks, has gone a little undertrack but is likely to lead to a serious institutional crisis between the legislative and executive powers here in Canada in the near future.

(more…)

“Canada, It’s Time to Expel All Chinese Athletes”

The calls to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics are growing by the day. A coalition group representing Uyghurs, Tibetans, Hong Kong activists, and many others issued a joint statement in May calling for the complete removal of the Winter Game from Beijing next year. Canada is in a particularly precarious relationship with China. With two Canadian hostages Michael Korvig and Michael Spavor held in prison, Canada so far has had a very tepid response to China’s aggression. The entire cabinet and a few other Liberal MPs along with Prime Minister Trudeau removed themselves from voting for the Uyghur Genocide motion. Perhaps they wanted to send a message of non-provocation to China. But this sort of appeasement has not served Canada well at all in the conundrum of Canada-China relations. (more…)

(more…)

Prime Retail for Lease

On a stretch of 1.9 kms, sandwiched between Yonge Street and the Royal Ontario Museum, lies the posh district of Bloor Street where the rich buy their Louis Vuittons and Hermes. These days of the pandemic, 17 stores or boutiques are closed, 8 of which have the sign “prime retail for lease” stuck to their windows. Never in my Canadian life, since I first set foot here in 1974, has there been that many vacancies, until now. While I can’t remember which boutiques ceased operating in Bloor, one store stood out for me — the Gap which is not even high-end but had 3 levels of shopping space which I would visit when I needed new shirts or items for Christmas gifts. Federal Minister Carolyn Bennet just found out that one flippant word uttered, toward a former Cabinet colleague, can have far-reaching consequences. Some people, especially those she has served unquestioningly in Cabinet, are “calling for her head”.
